DESK REPORT: OpenAI has announced plans to expand its advertising revenue model by introducing visual advertisements within ChatGPT, beginning later this month with its image generation feature for users in the United States.

According to a company blog post published on Monday, the artificial intelligence firm will test visual ad formats that appear when users generate images using ChatGPT Images. OpenAI stated that the advertisements will be clearly marked and kept strictly separate from the generated media, reiterating that commercial arrangements will not affect the core answers provided by the chatbot.

The development follows the company’s initial introduction of text-based sponsored links at the start of the year. OpenAI noted that incorporating visual elements is intended to help users better visualize how recommended products and services could fit into their everyday lives.

However, paid tiers will remain ad-free. The company confirmed that ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscribers will not see advertisements during their conversations.

The initial rollout is being conducted with a select group of partner advertisers, with OpenAI signaling plans to experiment with additional advertising formats in subsequent phases. To address ethical and safety concerns, the firm underscored that strict content filters remain active to prevent commercial promotions from appearing alongside sensitive queries, including personal health and mental well-being.
