Desk Report: Anthropic, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ‘Claude’, is making major preparations to go public. According to regulatory filings submitted ahead of its stock market debut, the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dario Amodei, earned $18 million last year.
If plans proceed as expected, the company could be listed on the stock exchange as early as this autumn. Market analysts estimate that Anthropic’s total market valuation could surpass $2 trillion following its Initial Public Offering (IPO). Despite the substantial payout, industry analysts consider Amodei’s compensation to be in the “mid-tier” range compared to other Silicon Valley tech executives.
Base salary and equity ownership
The bulk of earnings for Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei, along with his sister and company President Daniela Amodei, comes from stock grants and option packages. In line with broader tech industry trends, their declared base salaries make up a relatively small portion of their overall equity wealth. However, both executives received a salary bump in July, doubling their annual base salaries to $1.4 million each.
According to the filings, Daniela Amodei earned a total of $16.4 million last year in combined salary and stock benefits. Meanwhile, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Krishna Rao earned approximately $720,000 in base pay alongside significant stock option grants.
Comparison with tech peers and philanthropic commitment
Tech analysts note that Dario Amodei’s true net worth will become much clearer once Anthropic is fully listed and its share prices stabilize. While his paper earnings surpass the declared annual pay of CEOs at Alphabet or Amazon, he remains well behind top-earning executives at tech giants like Oracle and Nvidia.
However, the Amodei siblings are adopting a distinct approach to wealth management compared to traditional tech billionaires. The regulatory disclosures reveal that following the IPO, Dario, Daniela, and other co-founders have jointly pledged to donate 80% of their personal shareholdings to various charitable and public welfare causes.
